The #1 Florida Gators had their first weekday game of the season. The Gators started off their weekday games on the right foot as they beat the FAU Owls 6-1. They also debuted their black uniforms and hats for the first time. Freshman right-handed pitcher Jack Leftwich got his first collegiate start and win. Michael Byrne dominated in the eighth and ninth inning. The JUCO transfer Wil Dalton had a big night as well as the top of the order for the Florida Gators. FAU Owls outhit the Gators but couldn’t matchup what Florida did on the mound.
The Florida Atlantic Owls had a pretty decent performance against the defending national champs. They hit well but struggled throwing strikes and keeping runners off base. The FAU Owls suffered their first loss of the season as sophomore right-handed pitcher Nick Prather got the start. Prather threw 3.1 innings allowing four hits, four runs (three earned), three walks and two strikeouts. The senior Mark Nowatnick struggled as only threw 0.1 innings allowing three walks and two runs. It wasn’t a good day for the Owls pitching staff but they did hit pretty decent. Catcher Pedro Pages went 2-4 on the night. Eric Rivera went 1-4 and Cody Wilson also went 1-4 with a double.
#1 Florida Gators
The #1 Florida Gators stay hot as they defeated the FAU Owls in comfortable fashion. They got a very productive outing from Jack Leftwich. The freshman threw 4.1 innings allowing two hits, a run, a walk and five strikeouts. Andrew Baker, Tommy Mace also pitched well in relief as they threw a combined 2.2 innings allowing three hits, no runs, two walks and two K’s. Michael Byrne closed the game as he pitched two innings allowing two hits, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts. At the plate, the top of Florida’s lineup hit very well. Wil Dalton went 2-2 with two walks and three RBIs. Jonathan India went 1-2 with two walks and a home run. Austin Langworthy went 1-4 with a double and Nelson Maldonado went 1-3 with a walk and RBI.
The #1 Florida Gators will play tomorrow as they will take on the Bethune Cookman Wildcats. Freshman left-handed pitcher Jordan Butler is expected to get the start as it will be his first start of his collegiate career. Danny Rodriguez is a big bat to watch for as he has been one of their most dangerous hitters since he’s arrived at BCU. The Wildcats are looking for revenge as Florida ended their season last season in the regional finals.
