College baseball is finally back. The 2017 National Champions started their 2018 season on the right foot as the #1 ranked Florida Gators beat the Siena Saints 7-1. It was a great Opening Day for Florida as they dominated the Saints with great pitching and timely hitting. The junior right-handed pitcher Brady Singer had a great start to the season as he kept the bats quiet all night. The Gators also produced most of their runs in the last three innings of the game with clutch two outs hits. Two freshmen had solid starts to their collegiate career.
The Siena Saints start their season off on the wrong foot as they drop their first game of the season. The Saints started their ace to start off the season against the defending national champions. Brendan White threw six innings allowing seven hits, three runs, one walks and six strikeouts. The junior RHP Tom Sutera struggled against the Gators as he threw two innings allowing four hits, four earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Siena didn’t much done at the plate as the Florida pitching staff really overpowered the Saints. They only had two hits in the ballgame both off Singer. Brian Kelly and Yasser Santana both went 1-4 in the game.
#1 Florida Gators
The #1 Florida Gators came into Opening Day and took care of business as they knocked off the Siena Saints 7-1. Their ace Brady Singer had a great game as he threw seven innings allowing two hits, no earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts. The freshman left-handed pitcher Jordan Butler made his collegiate debut. Butler threw two innings allowing no hits, no runs, two walks and four strikeouts. At the plate, the Gators were very productive. The third baseman Jonathan India got things started with a solo home run to LF as he went 1-4. JJ Schwarz had a nice day as he went 2-3 with a double and a walk. Nelson Maldonado went 2-4 with a two-RBI double. The JUCO transfer Wil Dalton went 1-4 with a RBI single. Freshman Brady McConnell went 1-4 with his first collegiate home run.
The #1 Florida Gators will take on the Siena Saints tomorrow afternoon. The Gators will start right-handed pitcher Jackson Kowar. The junior led the SEC in wins last season with 12. The Siena Saints will start their junior left-handed pitcher Tommy Miller as they will try to even the series. Miller had a 5-6 record with a 5.82 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 76.2 innings.
