After the 2015 SEC Championship, the Gators knew they had a lot of holes that needed to be filled in their recruiting class. Florida Head Coach, Jim McElwain, needed a quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker and a kicker. The first recruit that Jim McElwain met on his recruiting trips wasn’t a QB and it wasn’t a wide receiver. Jim McElwain met with Eddy Pineiro, a JUCO kicker. As crazy as it sounds, Florida needed a kicker more than anything else and they were going to after the best kicker they could find. Eddy Pineiro was rated the number #1 JUCO kicker in the country and made headlines after posting 70+ yard field goals on social media. There was only one thing in Coach Mac’s way, Nick Saban and Alabama. Eddy was already an Alabama commit but, Eddy decided to flip to Florida and now he is a fan favorite.
Who is Eddy Pineiro?
Eddy Pineiro is the Florida Gators’ kicker but Eddy wasn’t always a kicker. Eddy Pineiro was actually a standout soccer player at his high school, Miami Sunset High School. He did play a little football in high school but only for kickoffs and extra points. After Eddy graduated from Miami Sunset, he would attend ASA College in Miami. Eddy was initially supposed to go to FAU on a soccer scholarship but, that didn’t work out.
Eddy would shift his prime interest to football, after attending the Kornblue Kicking program. He would wow many of the coaches as he was nailing 50-60 yard field goals. Florida would be the first school to offer Eddy Pineiro followed by Miami and Alabama. Eddy felt very comfortable at Alabama but knew that Florida would be the best fit for him, as their need would allow him to start day one. Eddy decided to commit to the Gators.
Eddymania takes over Florida
As soon as Eddy Pineiro stepped on campus, all Gators fans were on Eddy Pineiro watch. The previous season, Florida was 7 of 17 on field goal attempts and even held tryouts for kickers. Florida fans knew how special Eddy Pineiro could be and they were exciting to see Eddy kicking field goals instead of Austin Hardin. In Florida’s spring game, all eyes were on the QBs and Eddy Pineiro. Eddy shined in the spring game makes 3 out of 5 field goals. Eddy nailed 52, 46 and 56 yard field goals but also missed two field goals from 52 and 54 yards. Eddymania quickly took over the University of Florida as people started cheering “Eddy, Eddy, Eddy” before he even kicked the field goal. His teammates realized how talented Eddy is and they embraced Eddy making him the center of attention.
