Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators have reeled in one of the most talented players in the transfer portal. A former five-star recruit and Georgia Bulldogs Brenton Cox has announced he will be transferring to the University of Florida. Cox announced last Monday that he had entered his name in the transfer portal and planning on leaving UGA. Cox was one of Georgia’s top signees in their #1 ranked 2018 recruiting class. The Peach State native isn’t the only 2018 signee to transfer from Georgia, as QB Justin Fields went Ohio State and TE Luke Ford went to Illinois. This is the second transfer Florida has picked up since the beginning of the transfer portal.
Who is Brenton Cox?
Brenton Cox was a true freshman defensive end/outside linebacker out of the University of Georgia in 2018. Cox was an Under Armour All-American coming out of high school. On the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, Cox was the 23rd ranked recruit and the second-ranked strong-side defensive end in the country. On ESPN, Cox was the 11th ranked recruit and the fifth-ranked defensive end in the country. Cox signed with the Georgia Bulldogs over Alabama, Clemson, Florida, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, and Oregon. As a Georgia Bulldogs, Cox played in thirteen out of fourteen games as a true freshman. In those thirteen games, Cox recorded 20 tackles and one sack. Cox made his first start in the Sugar Bowl against the Texas Longhorns.
Brenton Cox is a 6’4” 245-pound defensive end/outside linebacker. Cox was one of the best pass rushers in the 2018 recruiting class. He is a long, physical pass rusher that can use his speed and strength to get to the quarterback. He has a good get-off and can set the edge. Cox is a player that can play with hands in the dirt or standing up. He’s a nightmare on third downs because he can beat offensive lineman inside and outside. He does need to work on some moves and will need to also improve on run defense. This is a great pick up for the Florida Gators defense as they had a very talented player with tons of upside.
