The Miami Dolphins earn their first road win of the season against division rival New York Jets to get off to a 2-0 start to their season and take the lead in the AFC East. The Jacksonville Jaguars won against the New England Patriots set the Patriots at 1-1. Frank Gore passes Curtis Martin for 4thall-time rushing yards.
The Dolphins offense totaled 12 drives with 58 plays of offense for the second week in a row. Ryan Tannehill went 17/23 on passing with 122 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 fumbles. 1 of which Miami lost and they lost another fumble at the cost of a bad snap by center Daniel Kilgore. Leading receiver was Albert Wilson with 3 receptions for 37 yards and a 29-yard long touchdown, also Danny Amendola who caught all 4 balls thrown at him for 32 yards total.
Kenyan Drake rushed for 53 yards on 11 attempts and a touchdown, Frank Gore had 9 carries for 25 yards and passed a New York Jets Legend Curtis Martin for 4thon the NFL’s all-time rushing list behind Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, and Barry Sanders. He also made one of the biggest catches of the game on a highly pressured throw from Tannehill on a 3rdand 19 yards with the ball coming very close to the ground around the line of scrimmage picking up the needed 19 yards and close out the game for the Dolphins. The offense looked a whole lot better on the field minus the fumbles, they improved on their 3rddown conversions going 6 for 13. Not good but better than last week.
The Dolphins defense locked the Jets down in the first half and loosened up in the second half, not ideal but got the job done. Their overall performance as well and should be noted. On the Jets, last drive of the first half after the dolphins go up 20-0 the Jets drive down the field all the way to the Miami 1-yard line just inches from getting into the end zone on a pass from Sam Darnold to tightened Chris Herndon. The defense set up the offense in good positions to score, after a T.J. McDonald interception the offense goes 15 yards for a touchdown.
The most impactful player on the defense was linebacker Kiko Alonso with 13 solo tackles and 2 fumbles, a big fumble on Robby Anderson, recovered by Raekwon McMillan to set up the offense at midfield to later score a touchdown. Cornerback Xavier Howard also got an interception on the first Jets plays following the fumble lost by Tannehill. They also forced 3 sacked for 14 yards total compared to the Jets 4 sacks for 46 yards. They only limited the Jets to 42 rushing yards, Ryan Tannehill rushed for 44 yards more than the Jets. Run stopping was a big key for the Dolphins defense to put the ball in Sam Darnold’s hands and make him beat you with his arm.
Miami’s Special Teams
Kicker Jason Sanders went 2 for 3 on extra points and did not attempt any field goals. Jakeem Grant had 3 returns for 48 total yards. Matt Haack could be one of the biggest keys to winning the football game by setting up the defense in such great position with 5 of his 6 punts inside the 20. Setting up the Jets offense on their 4, 10, 37, 8, 7, and 24 but was called a penalty on the Jets after the punt was received pushing them to the 16.
The Miami Dolphins will be back at home against the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders were just dealt a heartbreaker on the road in their divisional rival Denver Broncos, after leading all game to lose it with 6 seconds left in the game. The game could’ve been possibly tied if it had not been for Denver blocking one of Oaklands PAT field goal. Oakland has lost their first 2 games of the season and is still looking for that first win. Last season these two teams played on a Sunday night game with the Raiders coming out on top 27-24. Miami’s returning players should still have that bad taste in their mouth from that game.
Keys To Victory
Miami’s key to victory against the Oakland Raiders is to stop Marshawn Lynch and the rest of Oakland’s rushing attack, forcing the ball to be in Derek Carr’s hands. Now when that happens they need to put pressure on him or he will light up the Dolphins secondary. Miami’s offense will need to put up as many points as possible and make their drive be valuable. Involve the receivers more and do not overthrow deep threats Albert Wilson, Jakeem Grant, and Kenny Stills. Maybe also the return of receiver Devante Parker can be a big difference in the air attack.
Final Score Prediction
Raiders 20-28 Miami
