The Miami Dolphins keep their strong start to the season at 3-0 with a comeback win at home against the Oakland Raiders. The Dolphins overcame a 10-point deficit by having 21 unanswered points. The Dolphins remain in 1stin the AFC East and have a 2 game lead on every team with each the Patriots, Bills, and Jets heading into Sundays face off with the Patriots.
The Dolphins offense totaled 11 drives with 39 plays of offense. Ryan Tannehill went 17/23 on passing for the second week in a row with 289 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no turnovers. Leading receiver was Albert Wilson with 2 receptions for 74 yards and a 74-yard-long touchdown, he also threw a trick play touchdown Jakeem Grant for 52 yards. The rushing game was a non-factor with Ryan Tannehill leading with 26 yards, Kenyan Drake rushed for only 3 yards on 5 attempts, Frank Gore had 6 carries for 12 yards. The offense struggled on 3rddown going 2 for 8 and a lot of penalties that were questionable but set back and stalled the offense on most drives. Taking a step back in that area but explosive plays propelled the Dolphins past the Raiders for the win.
The Dolphins defense did not perform well on to start off the game but, played lights out after the Raiders first drive of the second half. The second play of the game Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw a short pass to wide receiver Jordy Nelson who broke it for 61 yards and 2 plays later scored a 12-yard touchdown. They allowed 325 yards passing and 109 yards rushing with a touchdown for each category. Most impactful player on the defense was split by linebacker Kiko Alonso with 15 tackles and Cornerback Xavien Howard got 2 interceptions, he intercepted a deep throw intended for Amari Cooper returned for 39 yards on a highly pressured throw from Carr and another in the end zone for a pass intended for wide receiver Martavius Bryant.
The Dolphins D also forced 3 sacked for 20 yards total compared to the Raiders 1 sack for 9 yards. The defense overall was not well and could’ve cost the Dolphins the game but stuck in there and got the stops needed to help get the win. There were notable injuries before the game. Safety Reshad Jones was out with a shoulder injury and his absence showed early on into the game. Edge rusher William Hayes fell to the ground after a sack on Derek Carr on the 2-yard line. He is out for the season with a torn ACL, he was attempting to not put a majority of his weight on the quarterback to avoid the newly and hated rule around the league that goes for a roughing the passer.
Miami’s Special Teams
Kicker Jason Sanders went 4 for 4 on extra points and did not attempt any field goals. Jakeem Grant had 4 returns for 105 total yards. Matt Haack had 6 punts totaling 282 yards and putting 3 of them inside the 20.
The Miami Dolphins will be the road at divisional rival New England Patriots. The Patriots lost on Sunday night to the Detroit Lions 10-26. The Patriots Faced former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia who had been around the Patriots organization since 2004 so he had known how to get at the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady.
Keys To Victory
Miami’s key to victory at the New England Patriots is to keep the ball away from the New England offense. Even though the run game was not as effective this past game for the Dolphins they should stick to it and run out the clock. The Patriots Defense has not looked well in their last 2 games and we should expect the Dolphins to test them and force the ball around the field. The Patriots did not play newly acquired wide receiver Josh Gordon from the Cleveland Browns and he has elite receiver potential and we have no type of insight on how he would be on this New England offense. That could be a big difference maker in the outcome.
Final Score Prediction
Miami 21-20 Patriots
