The Florida Gators baseball program added another highly ranked 2021 prospect to their #1 ranked recruiting class. Lakeland High School RHP Samuel Sloan announced last Wednesday that he had committed to the University of Florida. On Perfect Game, Sloan is the 318th ranked prospect and the 99th ranked right-handed pitcher in the country. Sloan is also the 12th ranked right-handed pitcher in the state of Florida. Lakeland High School has always been known to be pipeline for the Gators football program but could develop into a baseball pipeline as Lakeland’s baseball team continues to improve. Here is what Samuel Sloan had to say about the University of Florida and his recruitment.
Sport News Magazine: What was it about Florida that made you want to commit?
Samuel Sloan: Well first off, I grew up a Gator my whole life. I grew up watching football and baseball games and my whole life I’ve dreamed of going to college in Gainesville. I had always wanted to be a part of either the football or baseball program and I was blessed enough to get the opportunity for baseball my true love. The coaching staff is great. They welcomed me with open arms and treated me very well. There is no better place to get your degree from than the University of Florida.
SNM: What else intrigued you about UF?
SS: Just the atmosphere around the program and the whole city itself. Having a brother and a lot of friends that go there and a lot of buddies including two from the same city both committed. I’ll have a lot of relationships and with the new stadium being built, it’s so intriguing as a recruit to see all things that the program is doing to get more fans and draw more attention to the program.
SNM: Who do you know that’s committed to Florida?
SS: Carson Montgomery. He was from my home town.
SNM: During the recruiting process, what other schools were recruiting you?
SS: I had Virginia, Tennessee, Clemson, Virginia, LSU, FIU, Cal State, West Virginia, Ole Miss, Stetson, Arkansas, Duke, North Carolina and others.
SNM: What were your top schools before committing to Florida?
SS: My top schools were Florida, LSU, Virginia, Ole Miss and Stetson.
SNM: Which Florida coach did you have the most communication with?
SS: Coach Jeroloman, the newest coach.
SNM: What was his message to you?
SS: Well Florida has always been my dream school and last year I went to a camp and I never heard back so I lost hope. Jeroloman was at USF and he watched one of my high school games and I performed well. I never knew he left USF and went to UF until I looked up who he was. My buddy gave me his number and I figured I needed to give it one more shot and within five minutes of texting him, he called me and told me he was offering me. I told him I wanted to come up and view the campus and meet with all of the coaches. On Wednesday (last week) after I left Gainesville, I made my decision and gave Coach O’Sullivan a call.
SNM: Now that you’ve committed to the Florida Gators, are you officially shutting down your recruitment?
SS: The only thing I’d be open to if it was the deal is the MLB Draft. Florida has been my dream school and I could never pass up this opportunity.
