With the 2019 NFL Draft behind us, we can now look and breakdown the New England Patriots draft picks. The Patriots drafted ten players in the 2019 NFL Draft including five offensive players, four defensive players and a punter. They drafted N’Keal Harry, Chase Winovich, Damien Harris, Joejuan Williams, Yodny Cajuste, Jake Bailey, Bryon Cowart, Jarrett Stidham, Hjalte Froholdt and Ken Webster. There’s a lot to like about New England’s draft picks selecting some of the biggest names in college football. Bill Belichick and the Patriots might have found some answers to their biggest needs. The Patriots also made a few picks from players in the SEC with four out of ten coming from the Southeastern Conference. With a lot of hype around these draft picks, here are three rookies that could make an immediate impact in the 2019 season.
WR N’Keal Harry
With their first round pick, the New England Patriots selected Arizona State wide receiver N’Keal Harry. The ASU wide out was regarded by many as the most complete wide receiver this draft. At 6’3” 230 pounds, Harry is a big, physical receiver that can beat his defenders in many different ways. He was one of the best deep threat receivers at Arizona State as he usually dominated in 50-50 balls. Harry can play all three wide receiver positons and play them all at a high level. Harry is also very good in picking up extra yards after the catch and doesn’t go down easy. With Josh Gordon’s future in the air, this pick makes a lot sense as Tom Brady needs a receiver that can stretch the defense. There’s a lot to like about N’Keal Harry as he could play huge role in the Patriots offense.
DE Chase Winovich
With the Patriots’ first third round pick, New England selected Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich. This was a tremendous pick for the New England Patriots as Winovich is a perfect fit for their defense. He’s plays with a high motor and creates havoc in the opponent’s backfield. He’s also has a high football IQ and can read offenses well and get his defense set. Winovich is a great leader and should get the locker room’s respect very quickly. This is a player that makes so much sense for the New England Patriots to draft. They needed help getting pass rushers and Winovich was one of the best pass rusher in college football last year.
RB Damien Harris
The Patriots used their second third round pick on one of the top running backs in the draft. New England selected Alabama running back Damien Harris with the 87th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Now, this pick was a little surprising since the Patriots already have two quality running backs in Sony Michel and James White. The running back position really wasn’t a need for the Patriots but they still drafted one early. The selection of Damien Harris could mean one or two things. First, Belichick thinks very highly of Harris and couldn’t pass on him even with Sony Michel. Second, Rex Burkhead maybe on his way out and Harris could replace him as the Patriots third back. The Patriots offense likes to rotate their running backs so I could see Harris being used in short yardage situations and him rush in between the tackles.
I believe that this was a very good NFL Draft for the New England Patriots. They may have not drafted a tight end to replace Rob Gronkowski but they still got an offensive weapon for Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. They added some depth at the offensive line position with the selections of Yodny Cajuste and Hjalte Froholdt. New England also drafted two more cornerbacks to the secondary and got some defensive lineman that can rush the QB. Lastly, the Patriots may have drafted Tom Brady’s successor in Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Overall, I give this draft an A- since they still don’t have a tight end to replace Gronk but got some really nice player that can help the Patriots make another run for the Super Bowl.
